Autumn Notes

New Staff: Meet Sean Mullin, a new addition to our team. He is a Cape native and has been passionately riding bikes for almost twenty years. A talented mechanic, Sean has experience with everything from rebuilding suspension to tuning bikes new and old. He holds a full Shimano S-Tec certification so you can be sure his work is to factory specification. Sean is a mountain bike specialist who helped build and name many of the trails in the Trail of Tears. We are happy to have him. Stop by to say hi today!

 

Dressing for Cold Weather Cycling: Cycling is a great sport to keep you moving outdoors through

the winter. Whether biking off road or on it is increasingly important to dress appropriately for the weather as we enter these colder months. Like any form of exercise, your body heats up and creates sweat when you ride. Your goal is to hold onto that heat and to stay dry through appropriate layering of clothing. Besides temperature, it is important to consider factors such as rain and wind, as they have a significant impact on the gear that you need.

 

In terms of materials, wicking fabrics such as polyester, lycra, and wool are the best. Stay away from cotton, which does NOT keep you warm when it gets wet. When it first starts to get chilly, cyclists may add a light cap, arm warmers, knee or leg warmers, and thicker socks. As it gets increasingly colder, you might add a base layer, long tights, winter shoes or shoe covers, a balaclava, wind and rain resistant outer shell, and long finger gloves. Indoor Training: Some days a little too cold for you? Consider an indoor cycling trainer. There are three main types of indoor cycling trainers: fluid, magnetic, and wind. Fluid trainers are the all around best, quiet with a natural road like feel. Magnetic trainers are quiet, but the resistance isn't perfect. Wind trainers have good resistance but tend to be loud. Our trainer of choice is the fluid Kinetic Road Machine, pictured here. We have them in stock and available to demo. Don't let the cold weather keep you from training hard!

Cardboard: Innovative Material to be Used in the Production of Bikes and Kayaks

Wait...what?!


No, this is not an early April Fools post, and that was exactly our reaction when this was brought to our attention. A cardboard kayak. Hmm, sounds like a kid's weekend project that would meet very limited success, but a bike? Really?

True, the kayaks seem to serve the purpose of a fun challenge rather than something you will soon be seeing in our showroom, but it sounds as though there may actually be plans for mass production of the bikes. Of all the high tech innovations we have witnessed this year, this is certainly the most interesting. Take a peak for yourself!

Ditch Those Training Wheels

Tots, rejoice, for we have entered into an enlightened era with respect to your imminent bike riding lessons. Never again will you suffer the false security of training wheels, only to have balance ripped out from under you once you have learned to pedal. For today, we have come to the magnificent revelation that we ought to teach balance first.

We are discussing of course, balance bikes, small pedalless bicycles designed for older tots (think 2+). Here's the idea. You give a tot a little bike with enough clearance for him or her to sit on and walk with. She will walk herself around holding the handle bars and pushing the bike along. Next she will get a little braver and start to move a bit more quickly. Now for the kicker. She will start lifting her feet up and resting them on the small foot ledge that replaces a standard pedal. Ta daaa your toddler has just learned how to balance herself on a bicycle.

This makes for a seamless transition to a trainingwheel-less bike with pedals. Less of those traumatic crashes following "Mommy, promise you won't let go!" Learning the motor skills necessary for balance, that was the hard part. Learning to incorporate pedaling to these skills, not as tough.

Now, I sound like we have discovered some newfangled concept, but in reality this wave in kids bikes has its roots in the 19th century, in a contraption known as the Draisine. This early bicycle-esque machine was intended to move a pedestrian along faster than walking could carry them. It is one of many early designs that were the forefathers of our modern bikes. The Draisine however was unique in its reliance on balance, rather than a set of tricycle like double wheels.

The history and evolution of bicycles is really fascinating, especially in regards to children's bikes. If you would like to learn more, I really enjoyed the article "Down with Training Wheels" by Nicholas Day.

Winter Kayak Storage

So your Christmas tree is propped up on the porch awaiting preparations for its grandiose welcome into your living room. A few flakes were falling Saturday morning while you drank your morning cup of coffee. If you, like most of us, are a fair weather friend of paddling, sorting out winter kayak storage is probably on one of your upcoming weekend to-do lists. Maybe you just bought a kayak or SUP board this past summer, or maybe you just need some new tips on storage.

Before you hoist that fifty pound toy on your shoulders, make sure you know where you are going with it. Is the garage or basement really big enough? I recommend actually measuring. I know from personal experience that my perception of spaces and the truth are often dissimilar. If an indoor space is not available to you, how about a shed or overhang? No indoor space to speak of? Later on we will go over the best way to store it outdoors.

 

So, you have sufficient space indoors. What will you do? It is best to plan to store the kayak on some sort of rack or hanging strap system, or standing vertically on end, rather than simply laying it on the floor. There are many sorts of racks and strap kits available, but if you are crafty you can probably rig something yourself. Here we use a combination of homemade racks and strap systems. Also available are j style cradles (not unlike the ones you keep forgetting to take off your car), and hoist systems.

Alright, now we can get back to your boat or board. In either case, you probably want to wash your boat/board with fresh water and a nice sponge, to rid it of any salt, grit, or insects. Make sure you dry your kayak out completely, especially if you will be using a cockpit cover (which I recommend). Bring your boat or board inside and place/hoist/strap on rack etc... Now is the time to put the cockpit cover on to keep out any unwanted winter residents, leaving the kayak ready to go come spring.

In the event that you lack indoor storage, it is still a good idea to plan out your storage. Pick a shady area or overhang next to a shed. You could build a similar rack or use the same j cradles or straps on the side of a shed. Again it is a must to clean your boat or board. In this case you may want to retreat your boat/board with some 303 UV protectant spray. The cockpit cover in this case is highly recommended. Also you want to make sure the boat is upside down so that it cannot accumulate a large quantity of water. Water sitting and/or freezing inside a plastic kayak could severely damage the integrity of the hull, in terms of both its performance and appearance. Now you may want to use a tarp to create a shaded covering (though not too tight fitting) over your watercraft. This will help protect it from the elements and winter residents.

What about your accessories? Again, I recommend washing your pfd and paddle with fresh water. Spray the inside of the paddle shaft with a bit of WD-40 to keep it lubricated. Store the paddle pieces apart! Ideally store these inside a shed, basement, garage, or even spare closet.

 

Finally I suggest you take your skis, snowshoes, sleds, and skates out of deep storage in preparation for this season's adventures!

How to Dress for Cold Weather Paddling

Are you tempted by those blue skies but intimidated by that zippy bite to the air? For those of us clutching at the memories of our mild autumn, we can still squeeze the last drops out the paddling season (or even plow right through to spring), provided we know just how to dress for it.

Before the snow starts to fall and the ice sheets begin to form, get yourself geared up for a last hurrah on your kayak or sup board. A five millimeter farmer john style wetsuit with jacket will do nicely. Add a splash top, skirt, neoprene boots, gloves and a hood and you will find yourself perfectly toasty and not too bulky under that p.f.d. Once you have discovered the joys of paddling in the cool, quiet months of the off season, invest in year round adventuring with a paddling specific dry suit. Layered over fleece undergarments, these provide the ultimate in dry warmth. Neoprene keeps you warm by warming a thin layer of water between the fabric and your skin. The dry suit relies on strong seals to keep the water out altogether.

Always remember, the risk of hypothermia is very real, and anyone can succumb quickly. Never test the bounds of your paddling capabilities, your preparedness, or the conditions. It is crucial to use the utmost caution this time of year. That being said, it is very possible to (smartly) enjoy paddling on the outskirts of the season, or even year round, here on the Cape. June Happenings 2012

June Happenings at Sea Sports!
 It is a beautiful day here in Hyannis. We have been spending our days off riding, kayaking, and playing on the stand up paddle boards. We hope you have been getting out there too! Things are picking up quickly, so we would like to let you know some of the news around the shop.

 June 13th Stand Up Clinic: Jeff will be hosting a Stand Up Clinic at 5:00 p.m.to introduce newcomers to the sport. Clinic is free.

 June 16th Kayak and Stand Up Demo: We will be hosting our second and biggest kayak demo of the season on Saturday, June 16th, at Hathaway's Pond on Phinney's Lane. The Demo runs from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Representatives from the different kayak and stand up companies will be on hand with their fleets of boats and boards, as well as the Sea Sports crew. Event is free, with an optional five dollar donation to a local charity. Please give us a call if you are interested or have any questions, or just show up! We hope to see you there!  

June 27th Kayak Forward Stroke Clinic: Kayak instructor Larry will be hosting a clinic on the essentials of the forward kayak stroke at 5:00 p.m. Clinic is free.  

Kayak Tours and Lessons: This year kayak tours and lessons will be held weekly on Thursdays and Fridays at 10:00 and 2:00. Please call for reservations. Tours and lessons are also available Saturday through Wednesday upon request.

 Stand up Paddling: Lessons to begin in a few weeks. Stay posted!

Here at Sea Sports we spend a lot of time reaching out to our customers and our public, but we seem to let this blog slip through the cracks while focusing on other social media. If we may set an early New Year's resolution, we would like to try to make this blog another priority in our communication with you, our faithful customers.

Now let's get down to the good stuff! So much is new since the spring, and when it is combined with the spirit of the season you get some pretty exciting news.

Spring!

Welcome to our Spring news update here at Sea Sports. It seems that Facebook and our shop newsletter are easier ways to keep updated on happenings around here but we will try to keep the bloggers up to speed as well.

We are now OPEN on Sundays from 11-5. Our Sundays hours will continue through September.

We are having a kayak Demo this weekend May 22nd from 11:00-3:00 at Hathaway's pond in Hyannis. We will be offering mini clinics on the beach throughout the day. Come test paddle that new boat you always wanted or try out an upgraded model. The event is free and open to the public.

We have been busy training new divers this spring and despite the cold wet weather thus far the lobsters are starting to show up. Our Thursday evening beach dives start June 16th and are open to all certified divers. The dives run every Thursday throughout the summer at a cost of $20 per person.

I can't remember a time in the last 19 years in business when we have had as much new gear arriving at the shop, just boxes and boxes of bikes, kayaks, scuba gear, and accessories. New equipment and brands include Lazer bicycle helmets, Bic and Hobie Standup boards, Teva, , Stohlquist pfd's, Shimano cycling shoes, and Oakley sunglasses among many others.

We are excited for another great season here on the Cape! Hope to see everyone soon!

General news and updates

We had a great summer here at Sea Sports, weather was perfect, and business was great! While winding down the 2010' season we have been putting a lot of work into getting prepared for 2011'. We are installing new carpet in the showroom, and have done lots of improvements in the basement getting it ready for all the new 2011' product that is starting to come in.



Speaking of new product, we just got word that the new Atomic Cobalt diving computer has shipped. This thing is sure to be a game changer. We also received the new CAAD 10 bicycles from Cannondale along with a fresh stock of their other 2011' bicycles. Our 2011' preseason shipment from Native Watercraft is due the first week in December. On that order is also a re-supply of the ever popular Featherlight kayak.

We are running some Christmas Specials. We will continue to offer the $99 deposit Layaway on any kayak purchased before Christmas. (we provide a model miniature kayak to gift wrap) Old town is offering a nice rebate on their Vapor kayak. We are also offering a $50 savings on any new bicycle purchase valued at $299 or more. These specials run through the Holiday.

Wow, July 4th weekend is here! We wish everyone a safe and happy Holiday. The perfect weather we have been having has been great for just about any outdoor activity.

This year we are delighted to be introducing a whole new range of kayaking tours and courses, including Full Moon Tours, Dawn and Sunset Paddles, Seal-Watching Trips, Snorkeling Kayak Trips, Kayak Surfing Classes, Kayak-Camping Trips, Paddling for Fitness, Rolling Clinics and a special Fireworks Paddle for July 4th. From the diving front, last night's beach dive was a great success, with everyone having a great time. Beach dives will continue to go ahead on Thursday evenings for the rest of the summer, come join us! Congrats to the students of Chris Ranney, who just finished up their open water diver course last Tuesday!

Shop News!

Well the season is off to a great start and we have been very busy around the shop. Here are some updates and general shop news.

The shop is now open Mon-Sat 10:00-6:00 and Sunday 11:00-5:00. We will expand hours further by the end of June.



Kayak News: Our Big Demo is June 19th from 10:00-3:00pm at Hathaway's Pond in Hyannis. Manufacturer's reps will be on hand, and we will have over 60 different boats on the water. We will also have a kayak fishing clinic Friday June 18th @ 5:00pm. Please call ahead on the fishing clinic. Kayak lessons are in full swing! If you are interested just give us a call. Taking a lesson can be a great jump start into the sport. A lesson can also provide the knowledge to safely paddle in more diverse environments. We can provide a flexible schedule so if you don't see the class you want on the day you want just ask, we may be able to accommodate. As a bonus all lesson participants get a coupon for $45 off the purchase of a boat. So if you're in the market anyway, it really makes since. We have LOTS of new kayak models in stock...glass sea kayaks, sailing kayaks, electric kayaks, pedal kayaks, standup kayaks and boards, and even entry level boats starting @ $269. Come check it out!

Snorkeling/Diving News: Don't forget we are holding weekly beach dives starting June 17th. The dives will run every Thursday @ 5:30pm throughout the season. Please call ahead if you plan on coming. The dives are casual, and all certified divers are welcome. Learn to dive classes are currently being held. Please call for info or to sign up. In addition to stocking the premier product lines in diving from Atomic, SCUBAPRO, and Mares, we are adding SubGear to the mix. We are excited about it and think our customers will be too.

Cycling News: No news is good news... everything has been running great! Look for a shop group ride one day per week starting mid season. Great way to enjoy the camaraderie of others or get coached on basic cycling and group riding techniques.


Staff: We welcomed back Kelly Denham and Brendan Russo to the shop a few weeks ago. Brendan was on the fishing team at Virginia Tech and we welcome his knowledge in the kayak fishing area. Kelly has been working on her kayak guide rating and has been cycling to cross train for competitive running. Elaine Toomey is over from Ireland for the summer. She is a level 2 ICU Sea kayak Instructor and will be leading kayak tours and teaching lessons as well as spending time in the shop. Larry Bessinger our main kayak guide is spending lots of time on his Fuji Newest road bike, when he is not in his Current Designs Willow kayak that is. Matt Lounsbury is an avid scuba diver and will be seen around the shop more as the summer progresses. Jeffrey Gilman is getting ready for the Wilderness 101 hundred mile mountain bike race next month. Crazy! The list goes on...Bob Torrey, Chris Olsen, Chris Ranney, Mike Reardon... we have been fortunate to have a great team here at Sea Sports. Come by and say hello!

Spring Kayak Sale

We are having a Spring Kayak SALE this Saturday May 15th only. All in stock boats will be on sale 5-30% off. We are also having a kayak Demo on Saturday from 10:00-2:00pm @ Hathaway pond in Hyannis. If you're looking to try a specific model, please call and we will make sure we have it at the pond.

The shakedown dive is this Sunday, May 16th. This is a great chance to get in the water if it's been awhile or if you're a new diver. The dive is instructor lead and the cost is $30.

Our bicycle department has had a great start. Service is going smooth, and we have had quite a few happy owners of new bicycles already. Our shop is stocking a wide range of bicycles from $300 bike path bikes to a Focus carbon bike complete with Lightweight Wheels at $11,900 and everything in between.

The start of the season has been great. What that tells me is there are more people getting out and having fun. Thank you to our customers! We look forward to serving you! Come experience the service that has made us successful.

On another note, Jeff and his wife, Annie, have added a new daughter to their family. Caitlin Elaine Craddock was born May 6th at 3:55pm! We expect she will be every bit the outdoor enthusiast that her parents are.

First Day of Spring! Drysuit course...and Bicycles??!

Spring has sprung! We have been gearing up for a great season. We are offering a Drysuit course March 27th & 28th for anyone interested in getting an early start on the diving season, or maybe just staying a little warmer. It's a great class, and a good way to get some dives in early.


We are adding a new department to the shop for 2010'. We will be offering bicycle sales, service, and rentals. Grand opening of the dept is April 1st. More info on the department to follow. Rest assured we will still be your #1 source for kayaks, snorkeling, and scuba gear on Cape Cod

Post Holiday Paddle/ Closed Jan 1st and 2nd

We hope everyone is enjoying the Holidays as much as we are! Thank you for making the 09' season a great one for us here as Sea Sports. A few of us did manage to sneak out for a paddle on 12/26. It can be really fun this time of year if you dress correctly. If your interested in cold water paddling or diving stop by the shop and talk to us, we can help you get out there. The shop will be closed Jan 1st and 2nd. We look forward to seeing everyone in 2010'!

Catching Tuna and Hanging On for the Ride

customer that ran today in the New York times.


YARMOUTH, Mass. — Dave Lamoureux’s kayak, named Fortitude, must be the only one in Massachusetts registered as a motor vessel. That’s because a powerboat registration is required to get a permit to fish for tuna here.

Apparently, it never occurred to the authorities that someone might be crazy enough to want to catch a bluefin while sitting in what amounts to a floating plastic chair and enjoying what Melville called a “Nantucket sleigh ride.”

Since the end of July, Lamoureux has caught three bluefins this way, paddling a couple of miles off Race Point, at the tip of Provincetown, hooking a tuna and holding on, the rod clipped to a harness on his chest, while being towed at speeds up to 15 miles an hour before the fish exhausts itself.

His most recent catch, on Nov. 5, was a 157-pound bluefin, a record tuna for an unassisted kayak fisherman, and a near record over all, topped only by a 183-pound halibut caught by Howard McKim, an Alaskan, in 2004. Reeling in a halibut, though, has been likened to hauling in a load of plywood, and some of Lamoureux’s admirers consider landing a bluefin, known for its power and ferocity, the greater feat.

Sandy Neck paddle 11/3

We had a nice paddle today out to Sandy Neck. We went around the corner, surfed in some fun little 1'ers and got a good workout fighting the tide back.
